Procida, the smallest by extension of the three Phlegraean islands, has just been named the Italian Capital of Culture 2022.
An important recognition resulting from its natural and historical beauties, but also from the industriousness of its citizens who have been able to develop a distinctive tourist accommodation.
Minister Dario Franceschini said the good news, after having received the judgment of the jury of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, which had examined the dossiers of the 10 finalist candidates.
It was the first time that an island was nominated and was the winner of such an important assignment. Procida is the best expression of the hidden Italy, bound to the sea and which is embodies the Slow tourism, a tourism to enjoy slowly by thousands of tourists from abroad. Obviously, as soon as we can travel in complete freedom.
Procida won the title of Italian Capital of Culture 2022 with the dossier "Culture does not isolate".
The jury’s motivation was this:
"The context of local and regional public and private support is well structured. The heritage and landscape of the place is extraordinary.
The laboratory dimension that includes social aspects of technological diffusion is important for all the Tyrrhenian islands, but it is relevant for all the realities of the small Mediterranean islands. The project could determine through the combination of these factors a genuine discontinuity in the territory and represent a model for the sustainable processes of cultural-based development of the island and coastal realities of the country.
The project is also able to convey a poetic message, a vision of culture that extends from the small reality of the island as a wish for all of us, to the country in the months ahead".
Procida is also a perfect point to charter a boat, and visit the island and its wonderful coasts.
For some years in Procida there is a new Marina, where a large number of sailing boats and sailing catamarans are available, with or without skipper.
Procida is a very comfortable base, very close from the city centre, and with a picturesque landscape and typical hospitality provided by the inhabitants and operators of the island.
It is an island with three very interesting sides, and a historic center with a castle within walking distance from the port.
On the southern side, there is the small fishing port, Corricella, that seen from the castel, looks like a wonderful postcard.
Due to its integrity and purity, they didn’t turn it into a tourist place, it is a unique and distinguished island very different from the other two most famous islands, Capri and Ischia.
Moreover Procida is an island on a human scale, from here you could have everything at your fingertips, even the chance to discover the two most historically and known islands, Capri and Ischia.
You can visit them in a week of holiday, in Ischia you could find out one of the most beautiful spas and beaches and in Capri you could see the wonderful landscapes, such as the famous faraglioni and its alleys, which make it the island of charm of the three Phlegrean islands.
