How to keep our four-legged friends on board

In the last few years the presence of our affectionate four-legged friends on board a boat has increased; It is therefore right to give some advice to navigators who love animals, to make their stay as comfortable as possible for them and, of course, for their dpets. Both dogs and cats can board, obviously with some differences based on their characteristics. It is well known that felines do not love water or changes so much, they are habitual animals and fond of their home. It may be harder for cats to get used to sailing, but not impossible.

Now let's see our suggestions

  • Make your four-legged friends on board feel at ease; to make this happen it is good that they gradually become familiar with the new habitat, without any rush.
  • Make sure they feel safe by recreating their familiar environment, and teach them the necessary commands: first of all how to get on and off to the boat, if they are dogs obviously.
  • Make sure your dog does not suffer from seasickness, it will be easier if you accustom the dog as a puppy. Otherwise, take medications prescribed by your veterinarian.
  • Organize short outings, lasting about an hour and swim around the boat to check how your dog can swim
  • Teach him new commands, especially if you are on a sailboat, where maneuvers require specific space and timing, having a dog running around the boat could create some problems.
  • Get organized for his poo, the excrements ruin the teak of the boat. You can teach him to use an absorbent cloth. Please do not throw nothing of this into the sea!
  • Avoid extandebale lead, the dog in the boat must be kept unattached, except in case of bad weather.
  • Do not forget the life jacket for him size, the vaccination documents and if you are sailing abroad consult the local laws.
  • Get your four-legged friends on board accustomed to seeking shade and never let them lack fresh water; in this way your pet will avoid drinking sea water, which is toxic for everyone.
  • Secure a net on the rail to prevent your pet from falling into the sea during a sudden manoeuvre. Remember that falling overboard can cause death in bad weather or in the dark.
